Always get written estimates
Get written estimates from more than one business. Give each one the same detailed description of the work and the materials you want used, so you can compare like with like.
A written estimate should include a complete description of the work, the materials that will be used, estimated start and completion dates, and the required method of payment.
Warning signs
- They knock on your door saying they happen to be working nearby and can offer a special price.
- They promise a discount if you let them use your home to advertise their work.
- They quote without seeing the job, or demand a large down payment to buy materials. Reputable contractors keep accounts with their suppliers.
- They refuse to give you a written contract or won't let you get other estimates.
- They won't commit to estimated start and completion dates.
What good looks like
- Membership in BILD Calgary Region or the CHBA, the BBB and RenoMark is a strong sign a contractor is qualified.
- Check references and read reviews from past clients.
- Specific trades such as electricians, plumbers and gas fitters must be certified to work in Alberta. Ask about qualifications.
- Ask for the contractor's WCB number so workers are covered if they are injured on your property.
- Ask for an insurance certificate showing public liability and property damage coverage for everyone on the job.
