Why combine efficiency with a renovation

Walls, ceilings and windows are already open during a major renovation, which makes it the cheapest moment to add insulation, air sealing, better windows or a heat pump. Planned together, the upgrades also shape the design, from wall thickness to where mechanical equipment goes.

Calgary's Clean Energy Improvement Program (CEIP)

• Finances up to 100% of eligible upgrade costs, to a maximum of $50,000 per property.
• Repaid through your property tax bill over up to 20 years, depending on the lifespan of the upgrades.
• The financing stays with the property, not the owner, and can be paid off early with no penalty or discharge fee.
• The City estimated 2026 interest at about 6.00% to 6.10%.
• Eligible upgrades include energy-efficiency and renewable measures such as insulation, heat pumps and solar.

When you can apply

Residential CEIP opened in two intakes in 2026 and, as of this writing, is closed until winter 2026/2027. If you are planning a renovation for next year, watch for the next intake and pre-qualify before work starts, because upgrades generally need approval before they are installed.

What has closed

The federal Canada Greener Homes Loan, an interest-free loan of up to $40,000, is fully committed and no longer approves new applications. Homeowners who were approved earlier can still finish their projects.

Two federal programs remain for low- to median-income households: the Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Program and the Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program.
