Kitchen have always been the heart of most houses. Kitchens are where people gather
to cook, share meals and conversations, and they are even the room to which guests
gravitate during parties. These days, perhaps more than ever before, kitchens have
become even more central to the life of families, as we spend more time at home
because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The events of 2020 were terrible, but something wonderful came out of all that time
spent indoors. Folks are hurrying to redesign and update their kitchens, so that
spending time at home is even more enjoyable. Here are some of the latest modern
ideas for kitchen renovations we are seeing for the rest of 2021.
1) Go big and go bold. If you love dramatic design, your kitchen renovation
contractor can show you some recent trends in colours and materials that make a big
statement in the kitchen. Bright colours and sleek lighting fixtures are two popular
trends. How about mirrored marble for your new kitchen island, with veins of pink
and/or gold running through it? This is not for the faint of heart, nor is it appropriate
for a small kitchen, which may be overwhelmed by these materials. But if you have a
big kitchen and love these rich materials, go for it!
2) Balance warmth with modern elements. Sleek, modern lines in a kitchen look
great infused with a dose of warmth – for example, stainless steel and a modern
chrome light fixture, and a wood island or kitchen bar look fantastic together. You can
choose elements of different design approaches and have them work really well
together.
3) Take some risks. There was a time when kitchens were boring spaces that were all
about function, but no more. These days taking a risk or two makes your kitchen
unique and eye catching. For example: consider a pop of bright colour (red? Burnt
orange, perhaps?) over the stove or for the chairs you place at the kitchen bar. You
need not go all in and make the kitchen look like a painting by Andy Warhol, but you
can make it fresh and modern by taking a risk or two.
4) Let the light in! Is there anything better than sunshine pouring in when you’re
having coffee in the morning? If you’re lucky enough to have a large window in your
kitchen, ask your renovation expert to make it a focal point of the room, the spot to
which everyone’s eyes are drawn. If you don’t have a big window, consider adding
light fixtures that brighten the space and add focus to each area. Lights under cabinets
that illuminate the counter where meals are prepped is a great way to bring light to a
working area.
5) Small kitchens can be made big. If you’re working with limited space, like a
galley kitchen, for example, you are somewhat restricted by size, but imagination
takes you a long way. Floor to ceiling cupboards are big right now, and going with no
hardware on drawers and doors gives the kitchen an even larger look and feel. Using
one colour, all white, perhaps, or dove grey, also enhances size. Talk it over with your
kitchen renovator, who no doubt has lots of ideas about making your small kitchen
seem bigger.
These are a few of the modern trends we’re seeing this year, for 2021. While all draw
on different inspirations in design, they share one fundamental principle: how to make
the kitchen the place everyone wants to be. For more design ideas and more, contact
