Amur and Katherine Abdulghani based their choice of a renovator on a gut feeling, and it turned out to be a winning decision. Their home, a walkout design with a custom indoor pool on Chestermere Lake, received multiple awards at the 2022 Building Industry and Land Development-Calgary Region Awards. Kay2 Contracting Ltd., the renovation company responsible, earned the prestigious title of Renovator of the Year.
Amur Abdulghani expressed satisfaction with the extensive renovation, emphasizing the need for a renovator experienced in both pool builds and home additions. The couple, now empty nesters, had contemplated a renovation for years, particularly adding an indoor pool and spa to the lower level. The timing aligned during the COVID pandemic, providing the opportunity to redesign their dream home, originally built in 2003.
The renovation involved significant changes, including gutting most of the home, reconfiguring the kitchen, closing in the vaulted ceiling to create a luxurious master suite with expansive lake views, and adding a 1,000-square-foot extension for the indoor pool and spa. Moe Saghir, the managing director of Kay2 Contracting, highlighted the focus on maximizing lake views through extensive glazing, such as bifold doors and floor-to-ceiling windows.
Despite the nine-month timeline and the need for the owners to relocate during the process, Saghir emphasized the importance of hiring contractors with engineering expertise, especially in areas with high water tables. Challenges, such as water issues during excavation, were successfully addressed with specialized screw piles to prevent problems in the future.
Amur Abdulghani praised Saghir for exceeding expectations and catering to their needs. The completed home, handed over in November, left the homeowners delighted. The family room, now cozier without the two-story ceilings, became Amur’s favorite space, surpassing even the impressive pool room.
Kay2 Contracting, established in 2014, has gained a reputation for indoor pools, spas, and additions. In addition to winning Best Kitchen Renovation and Best Home Renovation with Addition, the company secured the title of Renovator of the Year for the second time in 2022. Saghir, passionate about his work, expressed gratitude for the award and highlighted the company’s expansion into Edmonton three years prior, with plans to continue growing.
