Include Home Entertainment in Your Renovation:
Keep the Family Laughing With This Games Room

If you’ve thought in the past that redoing extra space into a games room or an entertainment center was extravagant or wasteful, we bet the pandemic has made you rethink that position.

Everyone is at home more now, and although the coronavirus will soon be in the rear view mirror for all Albertans, having a space dedicated to fun for the family is a way to ensure you’re never caught off guard again, with the children staring up and saying, “Mom, what can we do tonight?”

A games room, one with just about everything from a pool table to a large screen TV and a corner for playing chess or Monopoly, is a terrific way to spend your renovation dollars and bring the family together for fun and lots of activity. Here are some ideas for turning that extra space, whether it’s an unused bedroom, a basement, or a three-season sunroom, into the kind of place the whole family loves, a hive that buzzes with activity, conversation and energy!

1) Put in a pool table and perhaps a shuffle board. Let’s say you’re finally turning the basement into a glam rec room with all the trimmings. A pool table (or any table game the family enjoys) is a great way to spend an evening with the kids. If chess or checkers are preferred, set up a table and two chairs off to one side — then all the games can be played simultaneously.

2) Bring the local movie theatre home. In this area, what’s needed most is comfy seating, so get your designer to help you choose ones that look great but are easy to relax into for movie night. Once all the public health measures are lifted, your kids will love having their friends over for snacks and a movie on a big screen TV – providing they’re old, enough, of course!

3) Install a swing in the playroom. If you have young children who can’t go see friends right now, setting up a playroom with a swing will make them forget how limited their activities are. Be sure to ask your professional renovator about weight bearing joists and ceiling reinforcements and other important features, since the kids will put a lot of stress on it by swinging back and forth. Put in a slide too, and this kids’ version of a game room will be a huge hit. Next year even the coldest day of an Alberta winter won’t keep the kids from enjoying their indoor playroom!

This is the space where you can let your imagination run a little wild, as everything about the decor should literally say, “fun and games.” If you’re looking for more ways to keep your home entertaining for yourself and the little ones while still looking great, contact the experts at Kay2 Contracting.
