Flooring Trends In 2020

Flooring and home design trends in Canada have changed considerably over the past few decades given the unprecedented advancement in our home renovation industry. Streets in the country are more and more rarely inspired by the Georgian era architecture, as we see an extensive blanket of condominiums, suburbs, and buildings that reflect the changing preferences of Canadian societies in general and homeowners in particular. One of the many changes in particular are flooring trends. Renovating your floors can give any space a dramatic new appearance. So, what are the latest flooring trends that will dominate floor design in the year 2020? Read on find out.

Fumed Wood Flooring:

Hardwood flooring is usually given some kind of staining to get a desired finish. That has become an outdated technique to creating a natural wood look and feel. These days, wood planks undergo the process of fuming through which they get rich color and stronger grain without staining. The rich, dark undertones that wood receives through fuming is very much in demand as it enhances the wood’s natural and unique grain while making the floor appear luxurious.

Large Porcelain Tiles:

In 2019, large porcelain tiles were among the best flooring renovation options for kitchen or bathroom remodeling. Porcelain tiles were mainly used in kitchen backsplashes and bathroom’s accent pieces. For 2020 however, you will see them taking over the bedrooms and living room renovations too because of the stunning and sophisticated look these create. Moreover, innovative patterns and shapes will be dominating the flooring styles; not just hexagons, which have had its fair share of limelight in the year 2019.

Blanched wood:

Some homeowners don’t like the glossy brown and stained wood planks and prefer to get a rather subdued, white-washed look, which is achieved through a process called bleaching or blanching. In this process, a chemical solution is applied on the wood surface to remove the stain coating or artificial dye that gives the wood its brownish color. Through bleaching, hardwood becomes ash-colored and whitish in appearance but the natural grain remains visible to retain the original charm of natural wood.

Black & White Tiles:

To create a vintage look, a great option is to use black and white tiles. This trend used to dominate the home renovation industry back in the 70s and 80s, and only recently it has made a big comeback but with significant improvement and innovation. Nowadays, graphic, bold, and luxurious black and white tiles in small size but with unique graphic patterns are very popular. This look is perfect for homeowners who want a unique blend of vintage and contemporary flooring out of their remodeling project.

Distressed Concrete Tiles:

You will see more of distressed concrete floors in 2020, as it has quickly become a popular alternative to traditional style of hardwood flooring. Distressed concrete is created through different processes that minimize its polished look and create a rugged and worn out patina. Distressed concrete floors can be integrated in all kinds of décor and themes but are better suited for contemporary style homes.

Herringbone Patterns:

A timelessly classic pattern of installation, herringbone patterns are made up of smaller blocks of flooring that can be laid in a variety of geometric patterns. Herringbone only refers to the pattern that is laid and does not in any way reference the color or material used. Many kinds of flooring can be laid in a herringbone pattern including a variety of woods and tiles. Depending on the design you are going for with your home renovation project, herringbone can be extremely versatile creating rustic, tradition and even modern styles.
